Ranches

Experience the real American West

A stay on a ranch is a unique way to experience the American West up close. Horses, vast landscapes and the great outdoors take centre stage, whilst each ranch puts its own spin on the experience. Ride amongst the giant saguaro cacti of Arizona, explore the open plains and mountains of Wyoming, or combine a few days of ranch life with a visit to Cody and Yellowstone. Our three favourite ranches each showcase a different side of the West.

Tanque Verde Ranch – Tucson, Arizona

Tanque Verde Ranch is situated in the Sonoran Desert on the outskirts of Tucson, between the Rincon Mountains and close to Saguaro National Park and Coronado National Forest. Horse riding is a key part of the experience: on guided rides, you’ll traverse a landscape of desert plains, mountains and the characteristic saguaro cacti. There’s also plenty to do besides horse riding, including walking and mountain biking. The combination of ranch activities, comfortable accommodation and the unique natural beauty of Southern Arizona makes Tanque Verde an excellent choice for both active travellers and those who like to take time out for some peace and quiet.

The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch – Shell, Wyoming

Nestled at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains in Shell lies The Hideout, a small-scale guest ranch where horse riding and horsemanship take centre stage. From the saddle, you’ll discover a surprisingly varied part of Wyoming, featuring open plains, high desert, rock formations, forests and mountainous landscapes. A special bonus for Belgian travellers: the owners, Peter and Marijn, are originally from Belgium and moved to Wyoming with their family. Due to the limited number of guests and the strong focus on horses, The Hideout is particularly well-suited to those who want to fully immerse themselves in the ranch experience for several days.

Bill Cody Ranch – Cody, Wyoming

Bill Cody Ranch is situated in the heart of Shoshone National Forest, about 26 miles west of Cody on the route to Yellowstone National Park. You’ll stay in wooden cabins and can explore the surrounding mountainous landscape on guided horse rides. The ranch has been in existence since 1925 and combines a stay in the great outdoors with the Western atmosphere for which this region is famous. Thanks to its location between Cody and Yellowstone, Bill Cody Ranch is also an excellent addition to a wider tour of Wyoming.
